A letter of recommendation or recommendation letter, also known as a letter of reference, reference letter or simply reference, is a document in which the writer assesses the qualities, characteristics, and capabilities of the person being recommended in terms of that individual’s ability to perform a particular task or function.
Make sure it includes the following elements when you ask someone to write a review for you.
  1. A short description of their contact with you. The letter should state how long you have been recognized and in what role, counselor, mentor, faculty, teacher, supervisor or colleague have worked with you.
  2. An focus on direct or indirect observation. If the observations are direct, it often has a positive effect as it provides a clear picture of the degree of interaction.
  3. A very fair evaluation of your eligibility and suitability for the course/program/study should be made by LOR. Rather than the recommender sounding more like an advocate, the focus should be more on suitability.
  4. A letter of recommendation should never discuss any competitive test grades or scores unless those academic specifics need to be interpreted. In your application, these are already stated and repeating them in a LOR is a major no.
  5. Any personal or confidential information about you should only be included if it has any significance or if it is deemed absolutely appropriate.
  6. The letter of recommendation should mention the strengths and specific contributions that you would bring to the university, to which you would be able to contribute to positive improvements, effects and new learning.
